Team USA has secured a spot in the knockout round for men’s basketball at the 2024 Olympics thanks in part to the contributions of three Celtics. Jayson Tatum, Derrick White and Jrue Holiday have all played significant minutes for the Americans during the team’s 2-0 start in Group C pool play, which includes wins over Serbia and South Sudan. Let’s take a closer look at the contributions of each Boston player so far and their standing on the team as the competition ramps up.

Jayson Tatum: The All-Star forward has only played in one of two games for Team USA in pool play after a surprising DNP-CD against Serbia on Sunday. He was inserted into the starting five against South Sudan in Wednesday’s win but had a quiet game offensively, posting four points and five rebounds in just 17 minutes. Tatum did not show much aggression offensively coming off the benching but did not have a nice defensive effort in the win including a great recovery block.

Steve Kerr hinted after Wednesday’s win that Tatum’s move to the starting five would be short lived with Joel Embiid getting the nod against Puerto Rico on Saturday. While there was plenty of drama around Tatum’s benching earlier this week, Kerr emphasized he’s not going to focus on the outside noise when it comes to playing his stars.

“The NBA is so popular worldwide, and the regular season is kind of a soap opera. And so we understand that, and social media takes over and everything becomes so dramatic,” Kerr told reporters in Paris. “And I think we need to give these guys more credit. They’re here to win a gold medal

“The beauty of the Olympics is none of that crap matters. And I know everyone’s going to write about it, but none of that crap matters. We’re just trying to win every game and win a gold medal, and it’s an incredibly pure feeling — and the guys are committed to each other, and they’re not going to worry about any of that.”

Derrick White: The Celtics point guard was a late addition to Team USA last month as a replacement for Kawhi Leonard but has made his presence felt in Paris this week. White has been the most efficient offensive player on the roster, shooting 80 percent from the field (4-of-5) and 75 percent from 3-point range (3-of-4) off the bench. His biggest contributions have come on the defensive end though where he leads the team with five steals through two games. His ball pressure with the second unit has helped change the game for Team USA in wins over Serbia and South Sudan, earning him high praise from his coach

“Derrick White’s a phenomenal basketball player,” Kerr told reporters in Paris Wednesday. “He’s a winner. He’s a FIBA player. FIBA is different for every single guy. There’s some different rules, different flow. Derrick’s a champion. He’s a phenomenal basketball player, and he’ll continue to make a huge impact for us.”

With Stephen Curry continuing to struggle offensively (23 percent shooting through two games), White could get more opportunities for Team USA heading into the knockout round if Kerr elects to go with a defense-first look.

Jrue Holiday: The 34-year-old was heavily recruited by Team USA to join the Olympic squad this past year and it’s easy to see why. Holiday started one of two games for the Americans averaging 10 points each contest while shooting a stellar 61.5 percent from the field. He’s been the ultimate glue guy on the court as a passer against zone or someone who can create for others with drive and kicks. His outside shooting (50 percent from 3-point range) has been superb as well. Kerr has gone with a three guard look in some starting lineup groupings thanks to Holiday’s versatility and he is expected to be a constant in the lineup moving forward. He saw reduced minutes against South Sudan as a reserve and with Tyrese Haliburton getting an opportunity but Kerr said Holiday will be back in the starting five against Puerto Rico.
