McDonnell was named director of amateur scouting. The net result has been that the Stars have become one of the NHL’s top drafting teams. The Stars’ picks over the last decade have included Miro Heiskanen (No. 3 in 2017), Jake Oettinger (26th in 2017), Jason Robertson (39th in 2017), Wyatt Johnston (23rd in 2021) and Logan Stankoven (47th in 2021) among others.
