Forever in our hearts: Chase Elliott died in a car crash.

Because of his involvement in the collision with Daniel Suarez during the cool-down lap after Sunday’s Chicago Street Race, Chase Elliott was able to avoid punishment from NASCAR.

Elliott accelerated ahead of Suarez after taking a swipe at the side of his No. 99 Chevrolet. Then, as seen by Daniel Hemric’s onboard camera, he applied the brakes. Elliott avoided disciplinary action from NASCAR, but Bubba Wallace faced a $50,000 fine for dooring race winner Alex Bowman during the cool-down lap.

There was one significant distinction in both cases, according to FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass, which explains why Elliott got away with it all while Wallace did not.
