Ulster coach Craig Newby says the province have moved on from their European woe
Ulster’s backroom staff is set to change again this year, as skills coach Craig Newby will leave the province at the conclusion of the season.
The former All Blacks flanker has committed to work as an assistant coach in the Academy for English Championship club Ealing Trailfinders, specializing in defense.

Newby’s resignation marks the second change in Ravenhill’s backroom staff since Richie Murphy took over as head coach on a permanent basis after Dan McFarland left Ulster in February.

Newby joined Ulster in 2021 under McFarland and was a member of the coaching staff that guided the team to the United Rugby Championship Semi-Finals in his first season, losing to the Stormers in the final four.

He gained substantial experience in England during his playing career with Leicester Tigers, where he spent four years – one as captain – and won two Premiership titles, and will now return to promotion-chasing Ealing.

Meanwhile, Ealing have confirmed that former Ulster tighthead prop Ross Kane will be one of the club’s outgoing players at season’s end.

Ex-Ulster lock David O’Connor will also leave the Sports Ground in the summer, but it is already known that he will join inter-provincial rivals Connacht for next season, as revealed by the Irish club.
