Shortly after Kieran McKenna’s dismissal as Ipswich Town coach, Stephen Gleeson was confirmed.

Stephen Gleeson, the former midfield player for Ipswich Town, has been confirmed as the first-team player-coach at non-league Hitchin Town, following Kieran McKenna’s dismissal.
The 35-year-old, who had stints with Hemel Hempstead Town and Solihull Moors, signed with the Canaries in November 2021.

They ended up fourth from bottom in the Southern League Premier Division Central this season, and Gleeson was unable to keep them from being relegated.

Coach Brett Donnelly has molded his backroom crew and management group, which includes Gleeson joining the first team at Top Field as a player coach.

He has also been retained as a member of the playing squad, with Hitchin set to play in the eighth tier for the first time since the 2010/11 campaign. They’ll be looking to bounce back at the first time of asking next season.

The Irishman made 10 appearances for the Blues during his brief spell at the club under Mick McCarthy in the second half of the 2017/18 season.

He was not offered a new deal at Portman Road at the end of that season, going on to join Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen in the summer of 2018.
