CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — No matter when Drake Maye‘s NFL career effectively gets off the ground or whether the New England Patriots begin next season with journeyman Jacoby Brissett as their opening-day starter, North Carolina football coach Mack Brown envisions his former star quarterback ultimately reaching rarified air.

The Patriots made Maye the new fresh face of their franchise as the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft two weeks ago, and Brown said this week that he sees eventual greatness and Super Bowl trophies materializing in Maye’s professional future.

“I coached Troy Aikman (in college), and Troy really struggled early (in the NFL),” Brown said Monday, during an appearance with Boston radio station WEEI-FM.

He struggled early as a rookie at Indianapolis. And it ended up that they both won Super Bowls. So I feel like that when we talk about should he (Maye) be playing next week, should he start the season, regardless of whether all that happens immediately or not, it’s going to work out where he’s going to be be great.
