Celtic expert drops ‘huge’ confession – ‘I was wrong’
In the latter stages of their double-chasing quest, Celtic require the “authority” of Callum McGregor.
Frank McAvennie, a former West Ham United and Hoops striker, in an exclusive interview with Football Insider stated that he was incorrect to criticize the captain’s performances and insisted that he is necessary to “pull together” the Celtic team.
Before suffering an injury during the Glasgow giants’ 7-1 thumping of Dundee in February, McGregor, 30, was a stalwart for the team. He had started every league game.
Since then, he has become fit again, but in Celtic’s last three games across all competitions, including their Scottish Cup semifinal victory against Aberdeen on Saturday, April 20, he has only started once.
For Celtic, Callum McGregor’s comeback is “priceless” – McAvennie
McAvennie warned Brendan Rodgers that he should not start the Scotland international unless he is completely fit, but insisted that his leadership will be “huge” for the remainder of the season.
“I’ve had a go at McGregor for not playing well enough, but Celtic have missed his authority on the park,” he told Football Inside
“That’s what we need right now, it will be huge.
“Him coming back and his experience is going to be priceless.
“But he needs to be fit and there’s no point in him playing if he’s not 100 per cent fit.
“It would be a waste of space.
“If Celtic play well, we’ll take care of business – it’s in our court now.”
