The Mountaineers focused heavily on enhancing their pass-heavy assault, which had been sluggish until they reached their lone bye week between their fifth and sixth games of the season.

West Virginia had barely been successful passing, even though they had won four of their five games in September and had strung together a four-game winning streak.

The Mountaineers had not reached 162 yards via the air in any of their previous four games, but they did throw for 315 yards in a Week 2 victory over Duquesne. West Virginia managed just 301 passing yards in three straight weeks of victories over Pitt, Texas Tech, and TCU. However, during that time, backup quarterback Nicco Marchiol led the team for more than seven quarters after starting quarterback Garrett Greene had an ankle injury against the Panthers.

After returning, Greene played well in the Horned Frogs game, but it wasn’t nearly as good as what he did against Houston. In a 41-39 loss to the Cougars, Greene completed 20 of 38 passes for a career-high 391 yards and two touchdowns. Devin Carter, a wideout, was Greene’s primary target.

“I felt like I just got comfortable and got a few more opportunities this game,” Carter said. “I was glad to capitalize on them. There were still some plays left out there.”

Carter, who missed the win over the Dukes with an injury, had three receptions for 51 yards in his three previous games after finishing with six catches for 90 yards during his WVU debut in a loss at Penn State.

The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Carter was utilized in far different fashion against Houston than what he had been through his opening month as a Mountaineer.

“We played him more inside and that’s a better fit for him,” WVU head coach Neal Brown said. “He had some big plays. He had a couple really strong runs after the catch, blocked on the perimeter and we put him at the point of contact a lot. He can build off that and we need him to have those type of games. That was by far the best our pass game has looked. We kind of opened it up, too, but he made a lot of that stuff happen.”

While Carter spent the majority of his time with the Wolfpack on the perimeter and profiled as an outside wideout at West Virginia, Brown and the WVU offensive staff saw enough in September that they felt it was worth it to have Carter try his hand in the slot. As a result, Carter was often in motion and moved around more pre-snap than what he previously had.

“It was different. It makes you think a little bit more,” Carter said, “but it’s good to get that opportunity to play both sides and to move around, so the defense can’t really have just a set plan on you.”
