NEWS: Ollie Watkins, a star player for Aston Villa, can play again, but he won’t play after.
Ollie Watkins, the striker for Aston Villa, is out of Wednesday’s big match against Manchester City, but he might be back in time for this weekend’s visit from Brentford.

During Saturday’s 2-0 Midlands derby victory over Wolves at Villa Park, the England international sustained a hamstring injury. He saw an early goal disallowed for offside before Jhon Duran came on at halftime.

Watkins felt he could play on after the game, but Villa manager Unai Emery expressed hope that he had escaped a serious issue and that he would get scanned.

“I believe we will have to wait until tomorrow because he was experiencing some pain in his hamstring. It’s his hamstring, hopefully not too serious,” Emery stated.

“He said he could continue playing, but the doctor advised against taking any chances. We’ll scan him first thing tomorrow morning; ideally, not much will come up, but who knows.”

Before Wednesday night’s trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on title-chasing Man City, Emery provided an update on Watkins. He confirmed that the 28-year-old would miss that match, along with midfielder Jacob Ramsey, but that he might be able to make a comeback when former team Brentford visits Villa Park in the Premier League on Saturday.

“They will not be available for tomorrow,” Emery said of Watkins and Ramsey at his pre-City press conference. “They have small injuries.

“Jacob Ramsey is not getting better like he wants. We are not in a hurry with him. For tomorrow he will not be available.

“With Ollie, it is more or less the same. Ollie’s injury is a small injury, with some days rest, maybe he could be available for the next match.”

In addition to top scorer Watkins and Ramsey, Villa are also currently without Matty Cash, Boubacar Kamara, Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Buendia due to injury, while captain John McGinn will serve the final game of his three-match suspension following his sending off in the heavy 4-0 home defeat by top-four rivals Tottenham last month.

City could have John Stones back against Villa, but Kyle Walker, Ederson and Nathan Ake all look set to miss out.
