TORONTO (AP) — The Sports Network in Canada announced on Tuesday that Keith Pelley is leaving his position as CEO of the European circuit to take the helm of dominant Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
According to TSN, Pelley, who led European golf as president of Rogers Media until departing in 2015, has landed a job managing one of the biggest sports and entertainment conglomerates in North America.
With key ownership in the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has interests in four of the six major sports leagues on the continent.
In golf, the change would occur at a crucial moment. The European tour is a member of the June 6 deal to form a commercial firm that might transform the way golf is run, with the PGA Tour and LIV Golf’s Saudi sponsors.
The agreement was supposed to be finalized by December 31st, but talks have gone on between the parties.
An email requesting comment was not immediately answered by the European tour. This week, the tour is back in Dubai to continue its season.
Before departing in 2015 to assume control of the European tour, Pelley signed a $5 billion rights package with the NHL for Rogers Media. Beyond his blue-framed glasses, he contributed inventiveness to a tour lacking the resources of the PGA Tour.
