ESPN REPORT: Despite a $25.5 million buyout over Malik Reneau’s wives, Indiana Hoosiers head coach has been fired.
BLOOMINGTON: Tom Allen, the football coach at IU, was fired on Sunday after seven seasons in Bloomington, an insider told IndyStar.
After three years at Indiana, Allen is 33-49 overall and 18-43 in Big Ten play.
Following his spectacular victories in 2019 and 2020, Allen concluded his final three seasons with a 9-27 record, 3–23 in the Big Ten, and no Power Five nonconference victories.
Ultimately, despite a contract buyout exceeding $20 million due across the next four years — which was negotiated down to two $7.75 million payments that will be paid through the department of athletics donor funds — current athletic director Scott Dolson determined a change of direction necessary. Dolson’s search for a new football coach — Indiana’s third in the past 13 years — will begin immediately.
On the day the Hoosiers fired head coach Kevin Wilson, Allen was brought on as a full-time employee, but his tenure started under tense and peculiar circumstances. In the second of Wilson’s two bowl seasons, Allen played a key role in turning around a severely underperforming defense and guiding the Hoosiers to a 6-6 record and a Foster Farms Bowl appearance.
