Martínez banned for Aston Villa’s UECL game after shootout card……
Emiliano Martínez, the goalkeeper for Aston Villa, will miss the first leg of his team’s UEFA Conference League (UECL) semifinal against Olympiacos since he was given a yellow card during their team’s triumph over Lille on Thursday in the penalty shootout.
Martínez was given a yellow card by the referee for wasting time during the quarterfinal match, and he was given another one for his antics in the shooutout, but he was permitted to play because cautions do not result in penalties according to the Laws of the Game published by the International Football Association Board.

Martínez stopped penalties from Benjamin André and Nabil Bentaleb to guarantee Villa’s place in the UECL semifinals.
Villa center back Frenchman Lucas Digne defended Martinez’s actions, which included dancing, hustling the home supporters, and attempting to thwart Lille’s penalty takers on multiple occasions.
Following Thursday’s game, Digne remarked, “He has a reputation, he knows how to deal with it, the truth is that he managed it well.”
“Being there for the World Cup means that I also get the French perspective. However, he’s a decent man and a great guy if you get to know him.”
