Following the referee’s “ridiculous” decision to punish Anthony Gordon for Newcastle’s Tuesday match against Everton, Gordon has responded strongly.

Gordon played a major role in Newcastle’s thrilling 4-3 Premier League comeback victory over West Ham on Saturday. The England attacker assisted Harvey Barnes in scoring the late victory and won both penalties that Alexander Isak converted.

But in the 94th minute, referee Rob Jones gave him a second yellow card, ruining his happy afternoon. When Gordon kicked the ball away, he was already booked for time-wasting and received another yellow card.

“I tapped the ball away. How far you want to look into that… it’s incredible really,” he said. “To get sent off for tapping a ball five yards. To be honest with you, I only think he booked me because he didn’t know he’d booked me before. That’s not good enough to be honest with you.

“I don’t want to complain about referees because they have a job to do. They are the rules so he’s sticking to the rules and laws of the game but it’s ridiculous really.”

Gordon will serve an automatic one-game suspension against his former club Everton, who visit St James’ Park on Tuesday evening. The 23-year-old forward joined Newcastle from the Toffees for £45million back in January 2023 and would have been relishing the chance to face them.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is gutted to lose Gordon for the game but believes two-goal hero Barnes can plug the gap. “That’s a huge blow for us, it sort of summed up the day really another absentee,” he said. “A big blow for us, especially for him personally with the game it was but Harvey and Elliot [Anderson] have come on the pitch and done really well so at least we have players in form.”
