College football players had unprecedented access to the transfer site, allowing them to search for new opportunities with organizations that could better fit their circumstances than the ones they were in at the time. The Athletic’s college football writer Andy Staples tweeted that Austin Reed, the quarterback for Western Kentucky, intended to submit his name into the gateway prior to the clock reaching 12:00.

A few hours before one of the most prolific passers in the country at the FBS level for the 2022 season declared his intention to use the transfer portal, head coach of Louisville football Scott Satterfield made the announcement that he was leaving the school to take a head coaching job at the University of Cincinnati.

Following the news, the Purdue football player Jeff Brohm’s return to his alma mater created an internet firestorm around the Louisville football program. The city of Louisville had been waiting for this fairytale-like reunion since Brohm was rumored to visit for the first time in 2019 before turning down the offer and Appalachian State’s Scott Satterfield took the position.

However, the University of Louisville was able to get their candidate just four days following Scott Satterfield’s quiet exit from the team. And once he arrived, there was a lot of conjecture about the quarterback position because Jeff Brohm is known for using an air-raid offensive strategy and producing very skilled quarterbacks, which are completely different things.

Due to a confluence of events that included Satterfield leaving, Brohm returning home, and Austin Reed becoming available through the transfer portal, Reed was soon offered a Crystal Ball by the University of Louisville because of his exceptional passing ability and ideal build for a quarterback in the Brohm offense.

The Saint Augustine, Florida native chose to play another season with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, however, and removed his name from the portal just nine days after putting it in. Given that he expressed a desire to play at a Power Five level, many fans started to question why. He claimed to have received offers from universities connected to each of the Power Five conferences, along with significant NIL arrangements.
