Jake Browning ‘s tenure with the Cincinnati Bengals has officially come to an end on Wednesday.
Monday night, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the team was releasing their seven-year veteran. Tuesday, Ian Rapoport, also with NFL Network, reported that Mixon is still leaving Cincinnati but in the form of a trade with the Houston Texans.
According to Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Bengals will receive a seventh round pick from the Texans in exchange for Mixon.
Thursday, Pelissero reported the pick headed to Cincinnati is pick No. 224 overall.
Behind the duo of Devin Singletary and Dameon Pierce, the Texans were the 10th worst rushing team in the NFL in 2023 (1,647) and the fourth worst in terms of yards per carry (3.7).
Comparatively, the Bengals posted the second-worst total rushing offense in the NFL last year, totaling just 1,527 yards over 17 games, but were slightly better in the yards-per-carry category, averaging 4.0 (just a tick under the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers, each of which rushed for over 2,000 yards).
A seven-year veteran with the Bengals, the 27-year-old Mixon was a key cog during the Bengals’ last two playoff runs.
Mixon crossed the 1,000-yard rushing mark in a season four times with the Bengals and has racked up 62 total touchdowns in his career, topped by a career season in 2021 when he ran for 1,205 yards and 13 scores as the Bengals reached the Super Bowl.
On Wednesday, Mixon took to social media to post a farewell message to the city of Cincinnati and Bengals fans.
“I’ve built so many friendships and relationships in Cincinnati over the past 7 years that will have a lifelong impact. All I ever wanted to accomplish for Cincinnati was winning football games and bringing back a championship ring,” Mixon wrote.
On Monday, the Bengals reportedly reached an agreement with former Indianapolis Colts running back Zack Moss in free agency. Chase Brown and Trayveon Williams are the other running backs on the roster.
