SAD DEPARTURE: San Francisco 49ers agree to deal with wide receiver, potentially bringing an end to the Nick Bosa era.
On Monday, the Vikings found out that quarterback Kirk Cousins will be leaving Minnesota in free agency to play for the Atlanta Falcons when the 2017 season starts.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Minnesota’s quarterback position was available, which allowed the team to reach an agreement with unrestricted free agency QB Sam Darnold.
Following his season in San Francisco, Darnold reached an agreement to sign a one-year contract worth up to $10 million with the Vikings.
When Darnold signed on to be the 49ers’ backup signal caller for the previous season, part of his ambition was to achieve this. After three turbulent seasons with the Jets and two more difficult seasons in Carolina over his first five seasons, he wanted a reset.
After agreeing to a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the 49ers, Darnold performed admirably in his limited San Francisco action. A year later, he received a $10 million deal to potentially be the starting quarterback in Minnesota.
Last season Darnold appeared in 10 games, although he only threw passes in half of them. He lost his only start against the Rams in the final week of the season when most of the 49ers’ starters rested. For the year he completed 60.9 percent of his throws with two touchdowns, one interception and 6.5 yards per attempt.
