There has been a setback for the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders throughout the offseason. Five players from each of the two teams have been punished for placing bets on NFL games after an inquiry.

Quintez Cephus, a wide receiver for the Lions, safety C.J. Moore, and defensive end Shaka Toney of the Commanders have all received indefinite suspensions for breaking the gambling policy of the league, according to ESPN. The three players have a year to petition for reinstatement, but Cephus and Moore have already been cut by the Lions front office.

The Lions’ Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams have been punished for six games for using mobile devices to gamble inside the Allen Park stadium. Interestingly, because they weren’t wagering on NFL games, their sentences were shorter than those of the other three players. After an inquiry by the NFL, it was found that no insider knowledge was used to influence games or obtain any kind of benefit.

Detroit general manager Brad Holmes stated, “It came to our attention that a few of our players had violated the league’s gambling policy as a result of an NFL investigation.” “These players demonstrated decision-making that is contrary to league regulations and our organizational values.” He explained that the team cut all relations with Cephus and Moore right away in the hopes of helping Williams and Berryhill realize the seriousness of their choices.

The Commanders provided less information. The organization stated, “Since receiving notice, we have fully cooperated with the NFL’s investigation and support the league’s findings and actions.” “The NFL League Office should be contacted with any more inquiries on the subject.”

According to NFL policy, employees and players are not permitted to wager on games, the draft, or any league-related events. They are also not allowed to wager when traveling with team approval or inside team facilities.
