JUST INN : St. Louis Blues sign Oskar Sundqvist to two-year extension; also fined for embellishment
Oskar Sundqvist, a forward for the St. Louis Blues, has agreed to a two-year contract extension for $1.5 million annually.
The Swedish center, who is serving his second stint with the Blues, has six goals and twenty-one points in 62 games so far this season.
Sundqvist said on the St. Louis Blues’ official website, “It was my plan the whole time.” “I wanted to help turn the ship around and be a part of the team.” Personally, I wasn’t ready to give up and walk away (at the Trade Deadline). I wanted to stay and support this team in its efforts to become competitive, successful, and eligible for the playoffs once more. Staying here played a significant role, and hopefully
The Pittsburgh Penguins selected Sundqvist with the 81st overall pick in the 2012 draft. With a height of 6 feet 3 inches, Sundqvist spent portions of two seasons with the Pens, where he won the Cup in 2016, before moving to the Blues for the 2017–18 season. After a nine-point run, he immediately made a name for himself as a big-bodied, two-way forward, and he assisted the team in winning the 2019 Stanley Cup.
After playing for the team for a few more seasons, Sundqvist was traded to Detroit in 2021–2022. Before relocating to Minnesota at the deadline the previous year, he played some of his greatest hockey there. For 2023–2024, Sundqvist returned to Missouri, where he still plays a vital depth position for the team.
The new contract is a substantial increase for the 29-year-old, who was scheduled to become a UFA this summer at the expiration of his $775,000 contract. The four-year contract that Sundqvist signed with the Blues in 2019 had the maximum salary of $2.75 million after an arbitration filing.
In addition, Sundqvist received a $2,000 fine by the NHL for embellishing during an incident that occurred at the conclusion of the second period of a game on February 28 against the Edmonton Oilers.
With 60 points, the Blues are currently tied with Nashville for the second wild-card slot and two points ahead of Minnesota.
