Chapel Hill, North Carolina — Regarding whether offensive lineman Zach Rice, defensive lineman Travis Shaw, and edge rusher Malaki Hamrick will suffer team discipline due to the misdemeanor charges they are facing, the University of North Carolina football program has not released an official statement this week.

UNC team spokesman Jeremy Sharpe told Inside Carolina on Thursday, “We’re aware of the situation, are continuing to gather information, and will handle things internally.” Sharpe declined to comment further.

Molly Elizabeth Rotunda, a student at UNC, perished on January 21 in a high-speed vehicle accident on North Carolina Highway 54 close to the intersection of Raleigh Road and East Barbee Chapel Road.
According to court records made public on Wednesday, Rice was following Rotunda, 20,’s vehicle quite closely. According to the Chapel Hill police warrant, Rice’s vehicle was “traveling 15 yards.”

Records show that Flemeeja Brewer, a 20-year-old student at UNC who survived the collision but is charged with several felonies, was behind the wheel of the leading vehicle. Brianna Tiera Pinson, a 21-year-old passenger in that vehicle, had non-life-threatening injuries. One of the iPhones in the car sent an automated 911 call, according to radio traffic that was made public on Wednesday. According to police reports, the collision happened at 2:23 a.m.

On Monday, Brewer made a brief appearance in Orange County court to discuss her allegations. Rice, 20, is expected in court on March 7. He is being charged with speeding and driving while intoxicated.

Agents from Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) are investigating the crash, and ten persons are charged with various offenses.

The court summons for the remaining accused, which include 19-year-olds Shaw and Hamrick, have not yet been delivered.Shaw faces five counts of aiding and abetting underage alcohol consumption and possession, underage marijuana possession, underage alcohol possession, and unauthorized possession charges. In addition, Shaw has an outstanding arrest order for neglecting to appear in Durham County on marijuana possession and consumption charges. Shaw purchased three bottles of tequila at Still Life, a bar and nightclub on Franklin Street, according to warrants, just hours before the tragic collision.
