Heyward and Batch were praised by King in his last story, which included them on his “Mr. Nice Guys” list of the greatest players he had ever covered.

His work with the impoverished in Pittsburgh’s impoverished neighborhoods is inspiring. Should write a book about how athletes—even lesser-known players—can significantly improve their hometowns,” King remarked of Batch.

“Being a beast between the lines, but sincere and considerate nonetheless. He then wrote about Heyward, saying, “He’s arranged for every male student in 11 Pittsburgh high schools—many of them impoverished kids—to get a free suit during their high school years.”

Even recently, King has consistently offered insightful commentary on the Steelers. He has discussed Art Rooney II and Mike Tomlin, been involved in rumors regarding who would succeed Ben Roethlisberger, and, to this day, he has caused controversy in Pittsburgh by revealing to the public that he chose Myles Garrett over T.J. Watt for Defensive Player of the Year.

During his one day in Latrobe, King was a regular at Steelers training camp, where every young journalist wanted to pick his brain. Congratulations will be plentiful for the National Sports Media Association Sportswriter Hall of Famer and previous McCann Award winner, who has now switched to the Bill Nunn Award, as he embarks on his retirement.
