Cornerback Charvarius Ward of the San Francisco 49ers is an All-Pro both on the field and when it comes to information hiding. Ward reported on Instagram on Thursday that he had surgery to treat an unidentified injury.

Ryan Kang/Getty Images Ward’s injuries from the Super Bowl were never mentioned, nor was it implied that he was playing through them beforehand. Because he was always participating completely in practice, Ward has chosen to keep his injury a secret.

Until he speaks to the media once more, it will remain unknown what his injury was and when he sustained it—assuming he discloses it at all. But there might be a clue as to what precisely Ward was able to fix. According to Ward’s Instagram post, the “Vincera Institute” is the surgical site. A quick google search reveals that they specialize in core injuries (thanks to Jeff Mueller).

Ward most certainly had a core injury, but once more, we won’t know for sure until he says so or until a 49ers player confirms it. In any case, his ability to play through any degree of injury is a credit to his fortitude. In actuality, it is evidence of the toughness of all the 49ers players.
Javon Hargrave, Deebo Samuel, Arik Armstead, Ward, and, it wouldn’t surprise me, George Kittle all played through injuries. Recall that Kittle took a little break during the Super Bowl then returned. It only serves to highlight how important it is to these athletes.
