The Detroit Lions attempted to strengthen their weak secondary last offseason by making some significant acquisitions in free agency, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful as both of their star additions suffered serious injuries.
According to a recent source, general manager Brad Holmes and the Lions plan to make another attempt this season to sign one of the best free-agent cornerbacks in the NFL. ESPN’s Matt Bowen made connections between the Lions and seasoned player Kendall Fuller by suggesting destinations for all 50 of the top free agents.
With signing, Lions Could “Boost” Entire Secondary
Fuller, a 29-year-old who just finished a $40 million contract with the Washington Commanders, would be a fantastic fit for Detroit, according to Bowen. Fuller played for the Washington Commanders for the previous four seasons. Despite attempts to add new players in the summer, he thought Fuller would help improve a secondary that was still among the worst in the league.
Bowen stated, “Last season, the Lions allowed 247.4 passing yards per game, sixth most in the league.” However, adding a perimeter corner like Fuller might improve the Detroit secondary’s overall picture. Fuller is a terrific fit for with his 16 career interceptions (10 in his last four years with Washington) and his astute man-and-zone playing
Given that the Lions have placed a high importance on defensive back versatility, Fuller would be a reasonable target. Sportrac projects that he will sign a three-year contract worth $42.3 million in free agency, but he may be pricey.
