This offseason, Justin Fields will probably be traded by the Chicago Bears. At this point, the more important questions are which team will ultimately make the move and what the return will be. The teams that are most likely to trade for Fields are the conventional suspects, but the New York Giants are an underappreciated franchise.

The Giants would seem unlikely to trade for a quarterback given that their current quarterback just inked a large contract deal and would be owed $47 million in 2024. But the Giants are unique in their circumstances. Jones gave no indication last year that he thought he was deserving of that kind of pay.

Last season, the Giants badly needed a backup quarterback. Tyrod Taylor is a free agent after they paid him $6.9 million toward the finish of season. If they were to trade for Justin Fields this season, his cap hit would be $6 million. In other words, the Giants would be producing the backup at a lower cost than the year before while yet maintaining full competitiveness.

Fields and Jones might challenge one another, and although the rewards would differ, the rivalry would remain equitable. If Fields does get the job, the Giants may either tag him, exercise his fifth-year option, or negotiate a deal for him the following season.
