In 2024, the New York Giants will have a new defensive coordinator on staff.
According to people with knowledge of the matter, Don “Wink” Martindale has resigned from his position as Big Blue’s DC, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport announced on Monday.
After serving as the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens for four years, Martindale joined the Giants in 2022 under Brian Daboll.
Daboll had stated earlier in the day that he thought Martindale will stay on as the defensive coordinator for the upcoming campaign. The DC is gone after many hours, and the Giants will have to start over defensively.
Martindale’s defenses, which ran a blitz-heavy scheme, were unpredictable. They finished in the bottom three in yards allowed per season despite giving up large chunks of yardage while still having an impact on passers and forcing mistakes. With 31 takeaways in 2023, the Giants tied for the NFL lead.
Sometimes Martindale’s defense kept Big Blue afloat as the Giants offense floundered, going through quarterbacks frequently. However, a conflict that both Daboll and the DC played down was the season’s high point.
Both parties will eventually split ways.
Martindale attracted some interest as a head coach during the previous cycle, and he might do so again this summer. He might potentially be a sought-after addition as a coordinator to a team that needs an experienced defensive lineman.
A significant day of change for the Giants was highlighted by Martindale’s resignation. Daboll had already disclosed that the organization had let go of offensive line coach Bobby Johnson (two years) and special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey (six seasons in New York). According to Rapoport, Martindale is anticipated to be joined by his brother, defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins, and outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins, wherever he ends up.
Daboll will make significant changes to his coaching staff at the beginning of the offseason following a poor second season for his team. The first task at hand will be to locate a like-minded
