However, Barkley and the Giants have had difficulty reaching an agreement on a long-term contract because of his history of injuries and the demands of the running back position.
Last season, Saquon Barkley was set to become a free agent at this point, but the Giants used the franchise tag to extend his contract for one more season. The two sides tried to negotiate a long-term agreement but ultimately settled on a reworked one-year deal.

In essence, Barkley would speak with other teams when free agency opened and then return to the Giants with the best offer.
