Breaking News: Joe Milton, the quarterback for the Vols, pushes back…

Milton III Ready to Showcase Talents in 2024 Reese's Senior Bowl - University of Tennessee Athletics

Joe Milton, the quarterback for the Tennessee Vols, disagrees with the theory that UT’s quarterbacks don’t need to read coverage or defenses. Milton is taking part in the Senior Bowl this week

.NFL draft experts have been partial to that storyline ever since Josh Heupel became Tennessee’s head coach in 2021.

“People assume that we don’t read coverages or that we don’t know how to read coverages because of our offense, simply because we [use] tempo and go so fast,” Milton stated last week in an interview with Tennessee Titans broadcaster Mike Keith, who graduated from UT. “But, man, we have summer quarterbacking school.” They are in fact now reviewing QB school. Whenever I have some free time, I speak with Nico (Iamaleava) roughly every other day. They are currently going over coverages and QB school. Teams who believe that we don’t research coverages or how to counter a defense will be proven incorrect.”

If anything, Josh Heupel’s offense-oriented style of the Vols should make Tennessee’s quarterbacks more skilled at reading coverages and defenses.

Heupel declared in the spring of last year, “Our guys control everything.” Nobody in America, in my opinion, puts more pressure on their quarterbacks than me. They have to handle everything—run-run checks, run-pass checks, loaded boxes, alerts, and kills.

Due to Tennessee’s fast-paced offense, Heupel’s quarterbacks must rapidly assess the type of look the opposition is providing and decide whether to go on an RPO or a choice route. It’s not at all “easy”.

Even though Tennessee’s offense is different, it nevertheless does a good job of preparing quarterbacks for the next level.
