Packers Fire Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry - Sports Illustrated Green Bay  Packers News, Analysis and More

Despite helping Green Bay surprise everyone by making it to the NFC Divisional playoffs, Barry has been let go from his position.

Few predicted the Green Bay Packers would perform as well as they did in the NFL 2023 season, but coach Matt LaFleur’s dismissal of Joe Barry as the team’s defensive coordinator will not make him feel much better.

For a large portion of the season, many had predicted that the Packers would finish last in the NFC North, and those forecasts didn’t seem all that off. But despite finishing the regular season with three straight wins—and even making it into the playoffs—they wound up with a 9-8 winning record.

In addition, they narrowly lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Divisional playoffs after thrashing the Dallas Cowboys 48-32 in the Wild Card round.

The offensive decline that many had predicted following Aaron Rodgers’ trade to the New York Jets has not materialized, as Jordan Love has generally impressed in his debut season as the starting quarterback. While there have unsurprisingly been some inconsistent times, there have also been many reasons for Green Bay supporters to be happy.

Winning games is a problem all season long.
However, the Packers have had trouble on defense. Maybe not at first look or on paper, considering that only eight of the other thirty-one teams have allowed fewer points this season. Throughout the regular season and the postseason, one of their biggest problems has been allowing opponents to mount game-winning drives. This was evident in the 49ers game defeat, as Brock Purdy’s late-game run in the fourth quarter set up Christian McCaffrey for the game-winning touchdown.

In a brief statement posted on the Packers’ website, LaFleur said:

“We would like to express our gratitude to Joe for his dedication and role in our past three seasons of accomplishment. In this league, Joe is among the best men I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and these selections are exceedingly tough.
