The irony of how the longtime head coach of the Steelers abruptly left the team to terminate his tenure cannot be overlooked.

When pressed about his future, the Steelers coach didn’t stand on ceremony as he left the podium in what turned out to be his final postgame press conference of the 2023 season. It goes without saying that nobody knows where, if anywhere, he will coach next.

What is Mike Tomlin’s situation?
Since the Pittsburgh Steelers’ season ended this past weekend with a 31-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Super Wild Card Weekend, Mike Tomlin had to have known that questions would be raised regarding his future in the days to come. To be honest, the situation in Pittsburgh hasn’t been good for a while, as evidenced by the public criticism Tomlin received for the team, specifically mentioning his players.

At this point, it remains unclear as to what comes next for Tomlin and there has been no official word on what comes next for the longest-serving head coach with one team in the NFL – Bill Belichick is gone now. So, here we are with Tomlin having alluded to the fact that he will take some time to think about his next move. Indeed, the 51-year-old recently explained that he will discuss his options with his family before making a firm decision on his future. To be clear, his 17 straight seasons without a losing season is the most in NFL history for a first-time head coach. In the time that he’s been in charge, Pittsburgh has seen a Super Bowl victory, two AFC titles, seven division titles, and been to the playoffs 11 times.

Well, would Mike Tomlin like to go?
If we accept Tomlin’s remarks above at face value, which he hasn’t explicitly stated, the truth is that he’s now debating whether or not to continue. As previously noted, with the departure of Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, Tomlin is now the head coach with the longest stay at a single franchise. Fascinatingly, rumors suggest that the front office of the Steelers would like to extend Tomlin’s contract; however, as of right now, it is unclear if he will accept the proposal. To be sure, other stories also indicate that Tomlin may be thinking about taking a short-term vacation from the NFL.
