One suspected target of the New York Yankees may soon be off the market. This offseason, New York has been linked to a number of players and has been one of the busiest baseball teams. The Yankees have already made a number of trades that have greatly helped the team, including acquiring Juan Soto and Marcus Stroman. With the possible exception of one or two relievers, it appears that the Yankees may be done adding at this point. The rival Toronto Blue Jays are one team that is still in the market for additions, and it appears like they might wind up with a rumored Yankees target. Although Toronto appears to be the final contender to sign Cuban fireballer  New York was considered one of the “strongest candidates” to land him.

Blue Jays Person of Interest: Who is right-hander Yariel Rodriguez?

“On Dec. 29, ESPN’s Enrique Rojas reported that the Blue Jays had ‘taken the lead’ in the bidding for Cuban free-agent right-handed Yariel Rodríguez,” Rosenthal stated. “I have heard the same thing every day for the last two and a half weeks. The Jays are hopeful about signing Rodríguez, a person familiar with their efforts told me. However, it appears that barriers to his immigration still exist, which keeps the Jays from closing a deal. From 2015 to 2019, Rodríguez, who turns 27 on March 10, mostly pitched as a starter in Cuba. In 2020, he became a member of the Chunichi Dragons, a Japanese team, and in 2022, he had a fantastic season in relief play. He did not play during the season after making his World Baseball Classic comeback for Cuba last spring.

Since New York has taken a few more actions, Rodríguez hasn’t appeared to be a viable alternative. Despite this, it appears that New York might have to play against him frequently in the division.

But hurdles evidently remain in his immigration, preventing the Jays from completing a deal.
