The right-hander was out for 32 games due to an elbow bone bruise and spent 27 games on the injured list due to right elbow ulnar neuritis. Starting at the beginning of the 2023 season, he recorded a 5.23 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 10 starts. Following his second arm injury, the Red Sox shifted him to the bullpen, but things didn’t get any better as he recorded a 4.95 ERA in 12 appearances (20 innings).

Following hip surgery at the conclusion of the 2022 season, Whitlock was sidelined for the 2022–2023 offseason. While still recovering from it, he actually started the first ten games of ’23 on the injured list
