MANCHESTER, Georgia (WANF/Gray News) — A high school football player in Georgia was discovered dead the day before his state championship game.

Brandon Smith, 17, was recognized as the student by Manchester High School.

He was discovered dead in a forested area behind a house on Sunday night, according to authorities.

Manchester High School stated in a letter to parents that the facts of his death are “still being investigated and will be shared publicly by local authorities.”

According to WANF, police suspect foul play. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the investigation.

On Monday, the 17-year-old defensive lineman was set to travel 75 miles north from Meriwether County to Atlanta to battle for a state championship title against Bowdon High School.

MANCHESTER, G.A. (Gray News/WANF) – A Georgia high school football player was found dead the day before his state championship game.

Manchester High School recognized Brandon Smith, 17, as the student.

According to officials, he was discovered dead in a forested area behind a residence on Sunday night.

In a letter to parents, Manchester High School indicated that the circumstances surrounding his death are “still being investigated and will be shared publicly by local authorities.”

Police, according to WANF, suspect foul play. The probe is being led by the Georgia Bureau of probe.

On Monday, the 17-year-old defensive lineman was due to travel 75 miles north from Meriwether County to Atlanta to face Bowdon High School in the state championship game.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the car was driving southbound on Springbrook Road when he ran off the road and collided with a huge tree on the west side of the road. There were no other passengers in the automobile, and the driver died at the spot. The driver was allegedly speeding, according to police.

The crash is still being investigated. It is unknown whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
