Jason John Bonham (born July 15, 1966) is an English drummer and the son of legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Following his father’s untimely death in September 1980, Jason has carried on his musical legacy by performing alongside the surviving members of Led Zeppelin on several historic occasions, most notably at the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at London’s O2 Arena in December 2007. In addition to these high-profile reunions, Jason has built a solid career as a session musician, fronted the hard rock band Bonham during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and joined forces with other rock greats in Black Country Communion and Sammy Hagar and the Circle, establishing himself as a respected figure in the rock world in his own right.

The story of Jimmy Page’s “Number One” ‘59 Les Paul. In 1969, Jimmy Page acquired what would become his most iconic instrument: a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard. Purchased from Joe Walsh for a modest $500 (with some claiming it was closer to $1200), the guitar was already modified when Page got it, featuring a slimmer neck profile ideal for his quick, fluid playing style. Almost immediately, it became central to his sound, replacing his Fender Telecaster as his main guitar both in the studio and on stage. The Les Paul quickly earned its nickname, “Number One,” as it became Page’s go-to guitar during Led Zeppelin’s meteoric rise. Its thick, sustaining tone was perfect for Zeppelin’s blues-infused hard rock, and it offered the versatility Page needed for everything from soaring solos to complex chord work. He even customized it further, adding wiring tweaks to expand its tonal options.

In the case of Led Zeppelin, the original songs were often old blues or rock and roll, but Jimmy Page didn’t just play the material as it was, but thoroughly arranged it and made it sound cool as if it was an original song. He was a genius tailor. This song starts quietly with an acoustic arpeggio, then turns hard rock, then returns to the acoustic arpeggio and finishes with a bluesy phrase. Jimmy Page’s extraordinary talent for arranging later gained him high praise in the classical music world, transcending genres, for his work on Led Zeppelin’s signature song, “Stairway to Heaven

Jimmy at his Thames riverside home at Pangbourne, where ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘What Is and What Should Never Be’ were routined. There was a particular energy about that house and it was quite a catalyst for everything that went on. “I came up with the guitar riff for “Whole Lotta Love” in the summer of ’68, on my houseboat along the Thames in Pangbourne, England. I suppose my early love for big intros by rockabilly guitarists was an inspiration, but as soon as I developed the riff, I knew it was strong enough to drive the entire song, not just open it. When I played the riff for the band in my living room several weeks later during rehearsals for our first album, the excitement was immediate and collective. We felt the riff was addictive, like a forbidden thing.” – Jimmy Page

History In December 1974, the Rolling Stones returned to Munich, Germany, where they had recorded their previous album It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll, to begin work on a new album at Musicland Studios. Wanting to release the album in time for their summer 1975 US tour, the band returned to the studio after the Christmas holidays and by January found themselves in a recording studio in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to continue work on the album and audition for a new lead guitarist to replace Mick Taylor. The band was joined by Wood, who had previously contributed to the title track of It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll, and would become a regular member of the Rolling Stones from 1976 onwards, even appearing on the album cover.
