SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said an arrest has been made after a two-year-old died from a gunshot wound to the head on Monday.

Officials said the situation began sometime on Monday when family members took the child to Prisma Health Hillcrest Hospital for treatment.

The child, identified as Zane Sebastian Burgess, passed away at 7:51 p.m. from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

After investigating, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the child’s home on Lebon Place in Simpsonville. There they arrested the mother, 32-year-old Deylakotia Simon Burgess, and her step-father, 50-year-old Willie Tyron Burgess Jr. for unlawfully placing a child at risk.
