Ipswich Town will surely say goodbye to long-term servant

Kieran McKenna brings top-flight ideas to Portman Road

Ipswich Town will undoubtedly bid a longtime employee farewell.

Ipswich Town is due to expire and it feels unlikely another extension will be agreed.

The 30-year-old first signed for the Tractor Boys back in the summer of 2018, initially on loan before the move was made permanent the following summer.

He then signed a two-year extension at the end of 2021, with the option of an extra year that could be and was activated at the end of last season.

However, having fallen down the pecking order under Kieran McKenna and featured minimally this term due to injury, it seems a doubt that an entirely fresh deal will be agreed at the end of the current campaign

Extension has not been fruitful, further deal seems unlikely

It was a sensible decision to extend the current deal of a defender as versatile as Donacien, but since that clause was activated, the St Lucia international has barely been available for selection, and the club has since risen from a recently-promoted League One side to being in contention for a Premier League place in a matter of months.

He’s made just four appearances across the entire season, mostly at the beginning of the season, and has missed the rest through injury issues, but may have struggled to maintain a consistent place in the starting XI in any case.

The last update from manager McKenna was that the full-back had received surgery on his “adductor area” at the beginning of February, with a recovery time that leaves them hopeful that he can return towards the end of the season.

Whether that will give Donacien enough time to make an impact remains to be seen, but it would have to be a spectacular contribution to chalk up this season’s extension as a success.
