This coming season, Johnson will receive $15.8 million, the final installment of a three-year contract he inked with Pittsburgh. Madden suggests that Johnson might want to wait and try to negotiate a new contract with the organization.

Madden stated on the Breakfast With Benz podcast, “I’ve heard Diontae Johnson’s future is in doubt.” As we approach the final year of his contract, there have been rumblings that he intends to hold one more hold-in, similar to the one he had two years prior, with the intention of making noise over Pickett at quarterback. I don’t like Diontae. They pay them way too much, and in my opinion, he is mediocre. However, if you plan to fire him for not being a Pickett fan? Come on, I mean.”

Johnson just finished a season with 717 yards and five touchdowns. Although he has only had one 1,000-yard season in his career, since he signed his agreement with Pittsburgh, he has had to contend with quarterback changes.

It is unclear whether the Steelers want to re-sign Johnson this summer or what the terms of a deal for the 27-year-old wide receiver would be.

Throughout his career, Johnson has been a dependable component of the wide receivers group and has assumed a leadership role within the group. Since their arrival, he has given counsel to George Pickens and Calvin Austin, who have both acknowledged his contribution to their growth.

Many have referred to Johnson as one of the top route runners in the NFL, and head coach Mike Tomlin has expressed nothing but praise for his contributions to the team. Nevertheless, the narrative surrounding his potential to play for the Steelers in the upcoming season is worth following.
