After Alabama’s inaugural fall scrimmage, head coach **Kalen DeBoer** provided a clearer timeline for deciding the starting quarterback. He acknowledged progress across his QB room—Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell—but noted that the advantage lies with Simpson and Mack, while Russell continues to gain comfort in the offense. DeBoer emphasized that the decision needs to come “by the time we get done with the second scrimmage,” but that “we’re getting closer” to making that call.
Simpson, in particular, appears to be edging ahead. Speaking at SEC Media Days in mid-July, DeBoer stated plainly: **“If we played today, \[Simpson] would be our starter.”** He praised Simpson’s continued development under offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and quarterbacks coach Nick Sheridan, highlighting his leadership, composure, and improved connection with his teammates.
However, despite Simpson’s favorable standing, DeBoer hasn’t closed the door on the others. He reiterated that Mack and Russell are still very much part of the conversation, noting their potential “big jumps” during fall camp.
In short, the quarterback battle is nearing resolution: **Ty Simpson is the current frontrunner**, but **Austin Mack and Keelon Russell remain viable contenders** as camp progresses toward that second scrimmage and the imminent opener.
