The Chicago Blackhawks have officially appointed Jeff Blashill as their new head coach, signaling a pivotal move in the franchise’s ongoing rebuilding efforts. The announcement is expected to be made later today or on Friday, May 23, 2025.
Blashill, 51, brings a wealth of coaching experience to Chicago. He previously served as the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings from 2015 to 2022, compiling a 204–261–72 record. During his tenure, he guided the team through a challenging rebuilding phase, making the playoffs once in his first season. Following his time in Detroit, Blashill joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as an assistant coach, contributing to one of the NHL’s most successful franchises.
The Blackhawks’ decision to hire Blashill follows a tumultuous 2024–25 season, during which the team finished with a 25–46–11 record, placing last in the Central Division and missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. The season saw the dismissal of head coach Luke Richardson in December 2024, with Anders Sorensen stepping in as interim head coach. Sorensen is expected to remain with the organization, potentially returning to his role as an assistant coach.
Blashill’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for the Blackhawks, who are looking to develop their young core, including standout rookie Connor Bedard. Bedard led the team with 60 points in his debut season, signaling a promising future for the franchise.
