Evan Longoria to Officially Retire, Concluding a 16-Year MLB Career
Evan Longoria, the esteemed third baseman who spent five impactful seasons with the San Francisco Giants, is set to officially retire from Major League Baseball next month. The 39-year-old veteran will sign a ceremonial one-day contract with the Tampa Bay Rays—his original team—on June 7, 2025, allowing him to retire as a Ray during a pregame ceremony before their matchup against the Miami Marlins
Longoria’s illustrious 16-year career began when he was drafted third overall by the Rays in 2006. He quickly made his mark, earning the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2008 and leading Tampa Bay to its first World Series appearance that same year. Over a decade with the Rays (2008–2017), Longoria became a franchise cornerstone, amassing three Gold Glove awards and three All-Star selections.
In December 2017, Longoria was traded to the San Francisco Giants, where he played from 2018 to 2022. During his tenure with the Giants, he contributed 70 home runs and 239 RBIs, with his most productive season in 2019, hitting 20 homers and driving in 69 runs. Despite battling injuries in his later years, Longoria remained a respected veteran presence in the clubhouse
After the Giants declined his contract option following the 2022 season, Longoria signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks for 2023. He appeared in 74 games, batting .223 with 11 home runs and 28 RBIs, before sitting out the entire 2024 season due to a back injury.
Longoria concludes his career with a .264 batting average, 342 home runs, 1,930 hits, and 1,159 RBIs over 1,986 games. His decision to retire as a Ray underscores his deep connection to the franchise where his MLB journey began
The retirement ceremony on June 7 will not only celebrate Longoria’s achievements but also honor his enduring impact on both the Rays and the Giants. Fans from Tampa Bay, San Francisco, and across the baseball community will have the opportunity to pay tribute to one of the game’s most consistent and respected third basemen
