To the fans, the snooker family, and everyone who has supported me throughout my career:
After much thought and reflection, I have made the incredibly difficult decision to retire from professional snooker. This isn’t a decision I’ve come to lightly, but one I feel is necessary at this point in my life. For personal reasons, I need to step away from the game that has given me everything. Right now, I need to prioritize my well-being and the people closest to me.
Snooker has been more than just a career—it has been a lifelong passion, a calling, and a journey that has taken me around the world. From my early days as a boy in Wishaw with a cue in my hand, to lifting world titles at the Crucible Theatre, every moment has been a gift. I’ve had the honor of competing with and against some of the greatest players the sport has ever seen. The victories, the defeats, the comebacks, and the near misses—they’ve all shaped me into the person I am today.
To my loyal fans: thank you. Your unwavering support through highs and lows has meant the world to me. Whether cheering from the stands or sending messages online, your passion has been a constant source of motivation.
I know this announcement may come as a shock. It’s sudden, and I understand that many will be left with questions. The truth is, sometimes life presents moments where clarity only comes with distance. I don’t have all the answers yet about what lies ahead. I only know that this is the right time to step away.
This isn’t goodbye forever. I love this sport too much to walk away completely. In time, I hope to remain involved with snooker in some capacity—perhaps in coaching, commentary, or mentoring the next generation. But for now, I need space to breathe, to reflect, and to focus on myself and my family.
Thank you all for being part of this incredible ride. I will forever cherish the memories, the friendships, and the love I’ve received from every corner of the snooker world.
With heartfelt gratitude,
John Higgins
