The world of cycling is in deep mourning today after devastating news broke that Tadej Pogačar, one of the sport’s biggest and brightest stars, has tragically died in a plane crash. The 26-year-old Slovenian cyclist was traveling to a major cycling event in Europe when the aircraft went down earlier this morning.
According to officials, the private plane carrying Pogačar and several team members experienced technical issues shortly after departure. Despite efforts by the pilots to stabilize the aircraft, it ultimately crashed in a remote mountainous area. Rescue teams arrived at the scene quickly, but sadly, there were no survivors.
The news has sent shockwaves throughout the cycling community and the world of sports at large. Pogačar, a two-time Tour de France winner and one of the most beloved figures in international cycling, was considered not only an elite athlete but also a kind-hearted ambassador for the sport.
His team, UAE Team Emirates, released a heart-wrenching statement shortly after confirmation of his death:
“We are devastated beyond words. Tadej was not only a once-in-a-generation talent but a friend, a leader, and an inspiration to millions around the world. Our hearts are broken. Our thoughts are with his family and all who loved him.”
Tributes have poured in from fellow riders, fans, and sports figures across the globe. Chris Froome wrote on social media, “The sport has lost a true legend today. Rest in peace, champion.”
Tour de France organizers also paid tribute, calling Pogačar “a bright light whose passion and spirit defined a new era of cycling.”
Fans have gathered at Pogačar’s hometown in Komenda, Slovenia, leaving flowers, candles, and personal messages in honor of the fallen hero. Many spoke of not just his incredible accomplishments on the bike but also his humility, sportsmanship, and infectious smile that endeared him to people far beyond the cycling world.
Pogačar had been preparing for what many believed would be another historic season, with hopes of securing a third Tour de France title and numerous other prestigious wins. His loss leaves a gaping hole in the sport that will not easily be filled.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is already underway, but today, the world pauses to grieve the loss of a champion who lived—and raced—with unmatched heart and courage.
